A Backlog Is Not a Junk Room

A Scrum Manager strip

Four-panel comic strip: the Product Owner boasts in front of her monitor of 843 ideas without having lost a single one, and the AI on the screen points out that the oldest is five years old; the team's validator asks her to read number one hundred, and it is "dark mode for the printer"; the Product Owner sighs and archives, and the AI reports 823 archived, none of which had moved up in three years; the validator concludes that keeping everything isn't caring for it but hiding it, and when the client asks about his request, the Product Owner points out that it is number four now.
The concept

Keeping every idea looks like diligence, but a backlog is not a warehouse of requests. Hundreds of old items that will never move up are not being cared for: they are being buried. They are a graveyard that hides the real order and demoralises whoever asked for each thing, because their request is lost among what no longer competes. A healthy backlog is shaped like a funnel, thin at the top and thick at the bottom, and it gets pruned. Ruthlessly archiving what no longer competes is part of the Product Owner's craft: saying no to the old is what lets what matters be seen, and attended to.
