Hero Culture

What is it?

One or more team members recurrently take on the main workload, solve all crises, and hoard critical knowledge, discouraging collaboration and shared responsibility.

Common symptoms (how does it manifest?)

- A key person solves most critical problems.
- This person accumulates knowledge and power (high "bus factor").
- The rest of the team depends on the "hero" and collaborates less.
- The "hero" is often overloaded and may suffer burnout.

Impact and consequences (why is it a problem?)

- High risk if the "hero" leaves or is unavailable.
- Lack of growth and development for the rest of the team.
- Low team resilience to problems.
- Demotivation of non-"hero" team members.

Frequent root causes (why does it happen?)

- Imbalance of skills or knowledge within the team.
- Reward system that praises individualism.
- Lack of collaborative practices (pair programming, code reviews).
- Organizational culture that values "firefighters".
