The Goal-less Sprint

What is it?

The team starts the Sprint without having defined a clear and coherent Sprint Goal, resulting in a set of unrelated tasks rather than a focused effort towards delivering a valuable Increment.

Common symptoms (how does it manifest?)

- The team cannot articulate a common goal for the Sprint.
- The Sprint Backlog is a collection of unrelated tasks.
- The Daily Scrum focuses on individual tasks, not progress towards a goal.
- It is difficult to make decisions about what to do if impediments or new work arise.

Impact and consequences (why is it a problem?)

- The team works without a common purpose, affecting motivation and cohesion.
- Risk of delivering a disparate set of features instead of a valuable Increment.
- Difficulty measuring Sprint success.
- Little flexibility to adapt, as there is no goal to protect.

Frequent root causes (why does it happen?)

- PO does not propose a clear objective during Planning.
- Team focuses on "keeping busy" rather than achieving a coherent result.
- Poorly refined or prioritized backlog without a goal in mind.
- Lack of understanding about the importance of the Sprint Goal.
