Agile Inception

Welcome to the Agile Inception topic.

Here you train and certify the competence of aligning people before an agile initiative starts, or of realigning them when it changes course. You will learn to prepare, size, facilitate, and close an inception that produces just enough shared understanding to work with purpose, without trying to remove all uncertainty up front. It is a skill that complements Product Owner training, and it is also useful for Scrum Masters, facilitators, product leads, and technical leads.

The training covers the seven blocks of the topic's State of the art:

  • What an inception is and when it adds value: minimum sufficient alignment and its limits against Sprint 0, the analysis phase, and continuous discovery.
  • Sizing and preparing: proportionality, participants, agenda, and the decision rule agreed before starting.
  • The alignment conversations: purpose, vision written as a group, scope and NOT list, context and team, solution, risks, constraints, and sizing without promising.
  • The reference patterns: the Inception Deck, Lean Inception with its rules and variants, and which neighboring technique to use for each conversation.
  • Facilitating the inception: neutrality, divergence and integration, participation and power, group decisions, and remote and hybrid formats.
  • Closing, handing over and realigning: the three legitimate outcomes, the lightweight record, the move to the Product Goal and the backlog, and the re-inception.
  • The inception in the age of AI: preparing, synthesizing and documenting with human review, the prototype and the agents in the room, and the evidence-based risks.
