The Status Report Daily
What is it?
The Daily Scrum turns into a session where each member reports their individual status to an authority figure (like the Scrum Master or a boss), instead of being a quick synchronization meeting for the team.
Common symptoms (how does it manifest?)
- Members speak "to" the Scrum Master or a leader, not to each other.
- It is limited to answering the three questions without generating conversation.
- Impediments or needs for help are not discussed.
- The meeting lasts longer than 15 minutes.
Impact and consequences (why is it a problem?)
- Missed opportunity for daily synchronization and collaboration.
- Impediments are not identified or resolved in time.
- Low transparency about progress towards the Sprint Goal.
- Meeting perceived as useless or a waste of time.
Frequent root causes (why does it happen?)
- Presence of managers or outsiders who intimidate the team.
- Scrum Master leading the meeting instead of facilitating it.
- Lack of understanding of the Daily's purpose (synchronization, not reporting).
- Micromanagement culture.
