The Endless Planning

What is it?

The Sprint Planning meeting drags on excessively, often exceeding the recommended timebox, due to overly detailed discussions, lack of backlog preparation, or attempting to plan every task meticulously.

Common symptoms (how does it manifest?)

- The meeting systematically exceeds the timebox.
- Very detailed technical discussions about small tasks.
- The team gets bogged down in estimation or decomposition.
- Lack of a clear Sprint Goal at the beginning of Planning.

Impact and consequences (why is it a problem?)

- Team exhaustion and demotivation.
- Loss of valuable time that could be spent on development.
- False sense of precision in planning.
- Difficulty starting work at the beginning of the Sprint.

Frequent root causes (why does it happen?)

- Poorly refined Product Backlog before the meeting.
- User stories that are too large or poorly defined.
- The team tries to plan *the entire* Sprint in detail.
- Lack of skill in agile estimation or effective decomposition.
